A Sweet Death in Thailand (currently on submission)

Novels

Kate Turner, ND, must use her diagnostic skills to determine the cause of her roommate’s death—and whether she'll be next, tangling with powerful people around the world who might profit from a breakthrough medical discovery.

At an international medical conference, Kate stumbles across a murder. The victim: her roommate, who shares her name—Catherine—and her interest in the antiviral Yumanista mushroom. The two women clashed publicly the night before. Kate knows she didn’t kill Catherine, but the police and media on both sides of the Pacific don’t seem so sure.

With the whimsical yet incisive help of her not-quite-imaginary mentor, Dr. G, Kate seeks the real murderer among a frightening list of suspects. It includes her beloved but battle-scarred uncle, who grows the Yumanista mushrooms sustainably with his wife’s village. A ruthless general tries to disrupt the trade in this valuable crop. Meanwhile, the late Catherine had competitors in the virology department of the University of Washington, not to mention the biotech giants sweeping up natural remedies for the medical-industrial complex.

A veteran of Seattle’s WTO protests, Kate’s no stranger to confronting exploitation and abuse of power. She uses her diagnostic experience to investigate the “Why?” of Catherine’s death. But in this case, seeking the truth—never mind justice—could prove hazardous to her own health, because as she gathers clues, the killer seems to be targeting her next.
